How To Make Tough Decisions (Tony Robbins’ Decision-Making Process)

17 November 2024

In my article titled “Choice or Chance The Unseen Forces That Rule Your Decisions,” I talked about the importance of conscious decision-making and the forces that drive your decisions.

Now, with this awareness, we will learn how to make tough decisions using Tony Robbins’ decision-making process.

In situations where you feel stuck, it often seems like you have no options. You don’t know what to do or how to decide.

In a panic, you make impulsive decisions without properly assessing your resources.

Or, you ask many people for advice, get overwhelmed, and end up making the first decision that seems logical.

I have a dominant personality type I referred to as the ‘Peaceful Phlegmatic’ in my article “Your Personality Tree-Discover The Real You.”

Because of this, I have a calm nature and the ability to stay composed and relaxed under pressure. This allows me to make calmer decisions during moments of panic.

However, because I failed to properly evaluate the resources I had and did not change my approach to decision-making, I have faced disappointment many times.

The decisions you make have the power to move you forward, but they can also hold you back.

But fearing making the wrong decision and being unable to decide at all can lead you to burnout. This is why knowing the path to improving your decision-making process is so important.

When I learned and implemented Tony Robbins’ decision-making process, I noticed that I could make decisions more clearly and confidently.

By applying Tony Robbins’ principles and processes of decision-making, you too can make clearer and more confident decisions.

Remember, just like building muscle, you can develop your decision-making ability and continuously improve it.

The 4 Rules of Making Tough Decisions:

1- All Tough Decisions Should Be Made In Writing:

When you try to make tough decisions by thinking, countless possibilities arise in your mind. These possibilities give birth to new ones, branching out and complicating the situation.

You may drift away from the topic you need to decide on, falling into a cycle. This creates a sense of pressure and stress, making decision-making even harder for you.

Ultimately, you either postpone making the decision or give up entirely.

However, putting your decision and the obstacles in your way into writing will not only reduce the pressure on you but also help you see your path more clearly.

This way, you can make healthier and calmer decisions. Sometimes, things that seem complex in our minds become simpler when written down.

The point to pay attention to is the language you use when writing your decisions. If you write positively, it shows you are enthusiastic and willing.

But if you write negatively, it indicates you still have fears about the decision. If you don’t want fear to hinder you from acting on your decision, think of the decision as “a must”.

Recognize that fear can serve not as an obstacle but as a driving force to push you forward.

Change your language, because your language, physiology, and focus are interconnected. If one changes, the others will follow.

2- Be clear about what you want:

Clarity is power! You must be extremely clear about what you want and, more importantly, “why” you want it.

What will drive you to follow through on your decision is your “why.”  If you’re not clear about what you want and why, everything will appear blurry.

If you don’t know your “why”, your decision may change quickly or be influenced by others.

When you know a decision is right for you, remind yourself of your why and repeat it until you believe you can achieve it.

3- Decisions are made on probabilities:

No one can claim to always make 100% correct decisions. Everyone tries to make the best decision based on the information and resources they have.

If you wait for perfection and absolute clarity, you’ll be waiting for the rest of your life.  And in the end, you’ll regret not having made any decision at all.

Leaders don’t make decisions with the certainty that everything will work out. They make decisions and move forward.

If their decision turns out to be wrong, they change it and continue on their path.

Often, tough decisions are more about making “a choice” than making the “right choice.”  If you make a decision that turns out to be wrong or not the best choice, you can change it.

Make a decision, set out on your path, and keep moving forward.

4- Decision-making is a value clarification:

Your decisions should align with your values. Be clear about your values. If you have limiting beliefs or values, work to change them.

When making decisions, you’ll have many possibilities. To choose the best one for yourself, your values must align with your decision.

Knowing your priorities and values makes it more likely for you to commit to the decisions you make.

OOC/EMR Decision-Making Process:

1- Outcomes:

You cannot make effective decisions without knowing exactly what you want.

Where do you want to reach? How will you know when you’ve reached your desired destination?

Your outcomes should be clear and measurable. Additionally, you should rank your outcomes based on your values.

For example, while you want to earn money, you also want to maintain your health.

2- Options:

Tony Robbins says that one option is no option, and two options puts you in a dilemma.

That’s why he challenges himself to find at least three options in every decision-making scenario.

Push yourself and write down all your options, whether you like them or not. When listing your options, don’t judge them because this is just brainstorming.

Having three or more options will reduce your pressure and help you remain flexible.

3- Consequences:

Consider the consequences of each of your options.

What are the benefits of this option? What are its costs? Write down the pros and cons of each option one by one.

You don’t have to foresee everything. Just write down all the details based on the information you have.

4- Evaluate:

Now that you’ve written down the consequences of your options, you can evaluate them. Examine the likelihood of each consequence occurring.

One of your options may have a significant disadvantage, but the probability of it happening might be very low.

Take notes on the evaluations of all your options.

5- Mitigate:

Every decision will have some disadvantages or risks.

How can you mitigate the disadvantages of your options?

Just like in investing, how can you achieve the highest return with the least risk?

Consider and write down every way to mitigate the downsides of your decision. This will make your options even more tangible.

6- Resolve:

The final step is to make your choice. Once you’ve made a decision, commit to it and take immediate action.

Stop negotiating with yourself and resolve to move forward.

While implementing your decision, evaluate the results you achieve and observe if you need to change your approach.

Sometimes, even when we know these processes and principles, we still struggle to make tough decisions.

This is because, when we make a decision, we embark on a journey, and since we can’t foresee the entire path, we feel afraid.

However, you don’t need to know the entire path. No one can know or predict it.

What matters is to make a decision, take the first step, and trust that a force greater than yourself is guiding you.

Whatever you believe in… Beacuse I believe in God, I know that when I make a decision and take the first step, God will show me all the paths when the time comes.

None of my decisions need to be perfect and none of my decisions need to turn out exactly as I planned.

Hold yourself accountable for the process, not the outcome.

You cannot know if the journey you embark on with your decision will lead you to a result that is greater and more beautiful than you could ever imagine.

Remember, with every decision, God prepares better results and surprises for you.

And God guides us every step of the way on the journey we take.  As Tony Robbins says:

Life is happening for you, not to you!

Right now, use Tony Robbins’ decision-making processes to make a decision you’ve been postponing or fearing for a long time!

Remember, the freedom to make decisions is one of the greatest gifts we’ve been given!

Be full of energy! Believe in yourself! Live with passion!

Take care of yourself!
